NEWS............

IMPORTANT!

The new Apple OS is a 64 bit only OS. The current version of PC9 is still 32 bit. This means it will not run on Catalina. The new 64 bit version is well under way and we had expected it to be ready before Catalina was out. But its taken a little longer than expected. Please do not update your OS yet as PC will not run.

Please turn off auto updates to ensure you are not upgrading the before the 64 bit version is ready.

PowerCADD & AutoDesSys, Inc. join forces

Dear PowerCADD Users,

Today, we have some exciting news about PowerCADD’s future. Engineered Software and AutoDesSys, Inc, (the maker of the form•Z 3D design modeler) are joining forces to develop the next generation of PowerCADD.

This partnership brings additional development, technical support resources and expertise, and a 3D connection to the PowerCADD product line and will add powerful 2D drawing capabilities to the form•Z product line. We share a vision of a drawing tool with classic PowerCADD capabilities using a modern approach that will take it well into the future.

Please bear with us through this process. We look forward to sharing details along the way and we hope to launch the new PowerCADD by the end of summer.

We look forward to sharing more details on the partnership in the coming months.

Sincerely,

PRD

PowerCADD 9.1.5 update is available. This version is compatable with Yosemite and El Capitan. Please note you will need to update all your plugins, Wild Tools, PowerClip etc, with this version.

OSX Yosemite.

ES have been using Yosemite since its early beta, and it has been working smoothly with the current shipping version of PowerCADD. We would not recommend updating the OS yet, regardless of PC compatibility. There are always teething issues which are OK for home users to deal with but not when one is producing. We aren’t aware of anything to prevent early adopters from moving to Yosemite, but if you encounter problems, we will not be able to immediately get you a new version of PowerCADD. And downgrading from Yosemite to Mavericks is difficult.

Thus, for most users our advice is to wait for our maintenance release 9.1.4 of PowerCADD before transitioning to Yosemite so that the program can be fully qualified and quickly updated if problems arise.

ES are currently working on making PC9 compatible with Mavericks and the update is imminent.

January 2013:-

Extreme Caution!!!

Please be aware that the free or almost free program called PopClip is reported to damage PowerCADD files beyond repair and crash the program.

If you have used PopClip please report your findings. Naturally enough if you have not avoid it!

February:-

We have observed that when a power outage occurs with Mountain Lion systems it sometimes corrupt the plist where the serial and install information is stored. PowerCADD will thus keel asking for you to key in the install information after every re-start. An easy fix you need to re-install the plist which was provided with your upgrade.

October

We are aware there is a problem with new installations of 9 on Mt.Lion. The serial install is not persistent and each time you open PC it will ask for your install codes and registration. The fix we know is imminent, but until ES have solved the problem we have a solution to this. Please contact us if you are getting this persistent request for codes and registration information.

Mountain Lion. Beware!

As always a new OS can bring great new features but also new problems for your applications.

PowerCADD 9 is not expected to have any running issues with Mountain Lion. But its early days yet so as always tread carefully and install with caution on systems used for production. If you use Time Machine its may be worth dedicating a hard drive, or a partition to back up your existing system just in case. It will allow you to step back to Lion or earlier. There is a problem with new installations of 9 on Mt.Lion The install is not persistent and each time you open PC it keep asking for your install codes and registration. We have a solution to this in the short term while ES are solving the problem which we know is imminent. Please contact us if you are getting this persistent request for codes and registration information.

PowerCADD 8 will not run with Mountain Lion.

PowerCADD 7 will not run with Lion or Mountain Lion.

Unfortunately it is not possible to keep older copies of software running with OS changes and there will not be a fix for 7 or 8.

July

WIBU driver issues on Lion. We have had reports of dongle's not working with the latest update to Lion. This can be cured by installing the latest WIBU driver V6.

Scroll down to WIBU Key for Users/WIBU Key RunTime for Mac. Select V6.

March

Multiple registration problems. I install PowerCADD but then when I quit and open again it asks for the install codes again. This is due to a change in Permissions within Lion. Easily fixed instructions here.

October 2011

PC update to address Lion issues.

A PC update is available taking it to 9.1.1. This update fixes the known issues with Lion. You should update as soon as possible. Please contact us for details if you have not received an email already.

July 2011

OS LION. Proceed with caution!

PowerCADD7 is not compatible and will not operate under Lion.

PowerCADD 8 is not considered compatible with Lion.

PowerCADD 9 has issues with Lion. They are not show stoppers as such, but are irritating. Avoid upgrading to Lion if you can.

Known issues...

Registration issues:
Likely you have a permissions problem down the file path to:
Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/Network/com.engsw.PowerCADD8.plist (PowerCADD 8) PowerCADD9.plist (PowerCADD 9)
Every location in the file path must have Read/Write privileges

Command Issues:
First thing you might try is to set or change the offending command in PowerCADD to an Option plus Keystroke.
Second you might check to determine if the shortcut keystroke is used in the System Preferences.

Keyboard Stops Working (Commands Stop Working):
Commands function as expected in 10.5 and 10.6. However, in 10.7 after using the software for a while, the keyboard
stops working. Quit and the the keyboard starts working again. Please notify Engineered Software and we will send
an email requesting further detailed information.

Some Commands stop working:
Quit and restart reestablishes the commands. Please notify Engineered Software and we will send an email requesting
further detailed information.

Moving Files:
Moving files on a volume that is not a Macintosh formatted volume will make the files unreadable.

Recent Files:
Sometimes too many files are opened. This is an Apple bug not exclusive to PCADD

PowerCADD 9 will of course be updated as and when issues with Lion are discovered. PowerCADD version 8 will not be revised and 7 will certainly not work so proceed with caution when updating systems. In addition, also proceed with caution when moving older files to newer systems. We have found that even Apple products have bugs in Lion!

A source of information on Lion, making interesting reading if you have enough time! Its far from concise!

http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.ars/1.

The referenced article indicates that only a very few programs will take advantage of the new features initially and we concur.

Importantly Rossetta has gone! If you still use any PPC app's beware they will not work!

Dongle drivers are much the same as before. The old driver 5.20 still works fine with 8 and 9 on Lion.

All the best.

Have fun, enjoy the new Operating System, but proceed cautiously.

January 2011

More NEWS............

Important!!! Future versions of PC, v10 on will see some major changes in the technologies Apple are providing to developers. There are legacy technologies that Apple will not be supporting in the future. The API's will simply not be available and some old technologies will not be available. Many will be of no consequence, eg PICT, (PDF has been replacing PICT for several years), Publish/Subscribe - Dropped long ago and Quickdraw, replaced by quartz also some years ago.

Most important and which may effect many of you who have been users for many some years.

  • Files with resource forks - Reading files with resource forks will not be available in version 10. Files older than version 6 (pre 2002) will not read in version 10. Normal administrative and general housekeeping over the years should result in minor inconvenience. Ensure that you migrate your files to version 6 of PowerCADD or later.

PC7 is now retired. After many years as the staple PowerCADD PPC solution it has been decided that 7 must now be retired. The development platform for PC7 was Code Code warrior has given way to X Code and thus no longer in step with the current processors. As a result 7 cannot be compiled on systems beyond 10.4. In short any problems with system changes simply cannot be fixed. So with regret its time for 7 to go.

November 2009

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

SNOW LEOPARD the latest version of apple OS 10.6 is for Intel Macs only. But more importantly it will not support PC7 through Rosetta which is an optional install. This means in practice that if you are running 7 or maybe even 6 on your Intel Mac should you upgrade to 10.6 7 will certainly not work. We understand that 6 may work under Rosetta but we cannot support it and have no idea how stable it may be. To use PCadd on Snow Leopard you will need to upgrade to 8. Any legacy (aka PPC) software you have may not work. We imagine that many users will have not only PCadd 7 but many PPC app's, Word, Excel, Photoshop etc. Worth checking before an upgrade to Snow Leopard is done.

May 2009.

PCadd7 important notice.

Newer operating systems always present the possibility of incompatibility with older software. PC7 is over 4 years old and PC8 has been available for over a year. PC7 is a pre Intel PPC application and we can not predict how much longer PC7 will continue to run reliably with the latest (10.5.x) OSX systems.

At some point in a future operating system it will not install the interpreter necessary to run PPC software. Only Apple knows when.

Here is a statement from ES on the situation.

"Versions of 6.x and versions of 7.0.5 and under are not compatible and should not be run with System 10.5.x and above"

The compilers that are used with PC7 no longer work with 10.5 so it is technically impossible to continue to maintain compatibility with 10.5 and further updates to the OS. We recommend that you do not update your system to 10.5. If you are on 10.5 already beware updating your system when prompted as we have no idea how a system change will effect the smooth running of PC7. PC8 has been available for over a year and we would urge you to consider upgrading to ensure compatibility with further OS upgrades. PC8 is Intel only.

PowerCADD8 update 10.014 is available for all registered users.

March 05-2008
Apple's latest Operating Systems make the 7.0.6 update Mandatory. Important for any Leopard users. Please update to 7.0.6. Its is free and and considered mandatory. System 10.4.11 is the last free update before 10.5 and is considered minimum.

PowerCADD 7.0.6 Changes

Added an optional setting in the Print Dialog under PowerCADD settings to print dimmed layers using a gray pen pattern instead of using transparency. This feature may be of assistance when printing to Postscript devices that have quality or time issues when using transparency.

Stability and compatibility with System 10.5.x (Leopard's) "Spaces" feature improved.

Attribute menus will no longer grow as objects are pasted into to a drawing with the "Global Attributes" feature is enabled.

Compatibility with certain older hatch definitions has been improved. Crash fixed.

Some of the attribute menus (lines, arrows, dashes) could under some circumstances grow incorrectly and beyond their allowable range causing command problems and in some cases instability. This issue has been addressed.

Drawing that have acquired too many dashes experienced a problem where the dash editor would crash with no method to remove the excess dashes. The dash edit dialog will always allow removal of dashes.

Versions of 6.x and versions of 7.0.5 and under are not compatible and should not be run with System 10.5.x and above.
